Mythology Rocks! Greek Mythology Research Project

Update: This project has recently been updated for Google Drive and uses a beautiful, modern new Google Site for the project webpage!

This unique, high-interest research activity takes 3-4 days to complete and can be used in any Secondary English Classroom! Students will love creating a modern, professional looking music video based on Greek Mythology research topics!

Students will not be writing a traditional research paper based on Greek Mythology research. Instead, they will use the art of digital storytelling in order to highlight and showcase what they've learned! It's impossible to plagiarize during the research process. Students will be limited to the amount of text that can be used in their videos. They will learn how to extract the most important information and details from multiple sources. No more copying and pasting of researched online information!

Students will select a Greek god, goddess, or mythological figure and conduct research using the included digital note-taking research chart, topic suggestion sheet, and the project webpage created with the new Google sites. All the research links that are needed are included on the project's Google Site. Students can research confidently and with clear direction by using the digital note-taking chart which includes research ideas for taking notes and topic prompts.

After researching their topic, students will search for and save images associated with their god or goddess and symbolic images specific to their topic. The images, along with keyword phrases and texts, will be used to create a music video using Animoto!

Animoto is a user-friendly site and program. Students will love showcasing their researched knowledge by creating a modern music video highlighting their Greek Mythology topic! Detailed instructions are included on how educators can apply for a class code that allows students to create full length videos for free! How to videos on using Animoto to create a music video are also included on the project's Google Site.

Though Animoto limits educator's accounts to 50 free student accounts, I've included "work around" directions that will allow you to gain full access to Animoto's dynamic features for an unlimited amount of students!

This short-term research project lasts 3-4 days and is the perfect supplementary activity to use before or after reading The Odyssey. This can also be used as a research-based, digital storytelling activity to supplement a unit on Greek Mythology. This purchase and teaching packet includes the following:
