This academic learning game engages students in the active process of learning a selection of Greek and Latin Root Words. It was created for a 5th grade classroom. However, I have used this "On Demand" game to effectively expose 3rd - 7th grade students to an understanding of these language elements, in context.
*You will need:
-a game piece for each player
-a dice or two (it's really up to you)
After rolling the dice, students move their game piece according to the number rolled. Students have to either provide an example word containing the root word that was on the card that they drew, a complete sentence using the word correctly, a definition of the word, or the choice to make :a demand" of another player. If correct, student gets to move according to the number on the dice. If they answer incorrectly, student must move backwards according to the number rolled on the dice.
My students not only love this game, especially the Choice tile, but their ability to recognize roots in old and new words, alike, and use them effectively increased tremendously, as a result of frequent playing!
