A bundled resource includes all you need to review Greek and Latin roots, together with many examples of English words with those roots. The roots are separated out so students can tell if it’s a Greek root or a Latin root. I use this lesson during the first or second week of school, and again as state tests approach, so my students can hit the ground running with vocabulary development. It's also great for review prior to state testing.
To keep your students engaged, both the Power Point and the task cards are decorated with cute clip art of Greek and Roman characters. The clip art is labeled with the name of the characters. Additional interest is generated with graphics of architectural elements of ancient Greece and ancient Rome.
(Time to teach and number of slides are in parentheses.)
Interactive Power Point presentation.
(20 minutes, 60 slides) This is the direction instruction part of the lesson. It includes an interactive “I Can” statement, 11 Greek roots, 15 Latin roots, 52 examples of English words with those roots, oral practice/assessment in an absolutely engaging interactive format. This will soon become one of your students’ favorite direct-instruction lessons of the year.
(30 minutes, 56 task cards)
24 task cards with Greek roots
32 task cards with Latin roots
That’s right! 56 task cards in all. Use them for individual practice, learning centers, small group instruction.
(2 posters) There is one poster for Greek roots and one for Latin roots. I post these on my word wall, and students refer to them throughout the year. It will help cement the new learning in your students’ long-term memory.
Student Study Guides.
(2-page study guide) A two-page study guide in the same format as the posters is included. Simply run these off front to back and send home with your students to practice for homework. They are formatted in color, but you can print them in gray scale if you prefer. Parents will love you for providing a study guide so they can help their children study for the quiz.
The quiz is formatted like the posters and study guide. It is open-ended, but with a word bank from which students will choose the correct answer. You can use the quiz as a practice sheet, pre- or post-assessment.
