English can be a confusing language. Take, for example, the word "carpet." If English were a logical language, a "carpet" would be an animal in an automobile, not a sheet of fabric on the floor! Root words help take the mystery out of word meanings by teaching students the building blocks out of which over 70% of English words are formed.

Greek and Latin roots (also called stems, forms, and morphemes) help with vocabulary acquisition because they make sense. They are the building blocks that form the foundation of thousands of words in the English language. If our students know the meaning of 200 or so roots, they can figure out the meaning of thousands of English words.

This collection of over 230 word wall cards is color-coded. Prefix cards are green, root cards are black, suffix cards are red, and numeric roots are blue. Each section has a heading card, too, and a blank template in case you want to add a morpheme that is not in the collection.

How I use 'em.
I always have about 30 of these cards on display in my classroom. I choose the ones that are most relevant to our current lessons and put them in a pocket chart. I use the cards to preview and review roots, prefixes, and suffixes that are in words we will be encountering. The cards are a hit with students. The pocket chart hangs near the door. I often see students taking cards out, looking at them, and talking about them as they mill around the door when coming or going.

Description
In this bundle, there are over 230 cards illustrating the meaning of the most common prefixes, roots, and suffixes found in the English language. The cards are designed for maximum visibility - even for those kids in the back of the room - simple borders, bold type, and big, high-contrast pictures.

For some of the roots, I've provided more than one picture-card so you can choose the one that best illustrates the meaning for your particular students. I also provided blank, editable templates so if by chance the one you are looking for isn't in there, you can make it!

There are some roots that are so abstract I wasn't able to think of an image to represent their meaning. Instead of an image to represent the meaning, they have examples of their usage and an illustration to go along with the example.

The English meaning of the root is written on every card, under the root itself. I made the English meaning small because I want students to use the picture to figure out the meaning - doing so gives them a more meaningful and lasting mental connection.

These word wall cards for Greek and Latin roots can be printed, laminated, cut, and used for years and years! Buy once, use forever!

Common Core Aligned
Greek and Latin roots, suffixes, and prefixes, sometimes called word stems or word forms, are part of the Common Core Standards from third grade to tenth grade.

Why is it important?
Roots, suffixes, and prefixes are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Chronology, polygon, bicycle, telescope, astrophysics, hyperventilate — the list goes on an on — all these words contain one or two Greek roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.

What's Included?
When I first made these cards several years ago, they covered only the roots and affixes that my students encounter in my drawing, digital art, ELA, and literacy classes. As time went on, I added more and more. Over the years, teachers made requests for specific roots and affixes. Now, there are over 230 of them in the bundle. In summer 2014 I went through and reorganized, color coded, and added examples! Below is the COMPLETE list. It's long!
