My students were not remembering anything from our standard Greek and Latin Word Study. Something needed to change. I started to use this Greek and Latin word study, And VIOLA! It struck!
Try out one week and see if it works for you!
The Word Study is based on the “Flipped Classroom” model. The students can take home the Discover the Root worksheet or complete it independently at school. The students are not told what the root of the week is. They must discover it and its meaning. After they have had a chance to review the words and make a guess, they return to the classroom. As a class the words are discussed, the root is determined, and the meaning is declared. The teacher guides them through the self-discovery process.
I use this for our spelling words also. Gives us another chance to look at and understand these words. As students are learning to spell the words they are looking at the roots and breaking the words into chunks. Just one more opportunity to sink in.
I added games as a way to increase the exposure to the words and roots. Next, I had the kids create the games. Wow! That was the magic sauce. They were much more engaged in the unit. They were enthusiastic and having fun. It was sticking. Find the Student Created Games here.
