Grendel by John Gardner can be a difficult text to teach. This activity helps students identify key quotes from the text as they read, as well as interact with each quote by providing commentary as to how the passages they have selected are relevant to themes and motifs, nihilistic and existential philosophies, and astrological references made throughout the text. This activity may be used as an ongoing interactive reading activity, a written assessment, or even as a pre-write to a literary analysis paper on the novel. Due to the complex nature of the text and the assignment, I recommend this activity to senior level students. I have had great success with the Grendel Golden Quotes assignment with both Honors and on-level British Literature classes when teaching the novel alongside Beowulf.
