This project explores the differences between Grendel's Mother and the Dragon as well as how they are "two sides of the same coin." Neither character has any hope left after many desolate years of experience--life has taught them the same lessons despite ending up on opposite sides of the literate spectrum.
Teachers, you will need to scaffold your classes with conversations/discussions that analyze both characters' belief systems and how they have become the characters described in Gardner's Grendel. This activity came from the various discussions my students raised regarding how these characters are so different and still live this desolate, isolated and hopeless life of which neither is a role model to Grendel.
