This is a complete PowerPoint that will guide students through creating a self portrait using the grid method. Chuck Close is the artist inspiration for this project. My middle school students loved learning more about his life and how he overcomes his obstacles. The PowerPoint includes:
Bell ringers in which students critique famous self portraits (Van Gogh and Kahlo)
Studio instruction slides, scaffolding the process (value, using line and pattern to create value)
Links to short YouTube videos, outlining Chuck Close's artistic process and background
Direction slide for the final project
Inspiration slide to keep up while students work on the final project.
I let my students choose their medium and technique to show value, resulting in some pretty amazing art. This project was a big hit at my school!
