This is a super fun Common Core ELA and Social Science Lesson! First, students read the primary source Epic of Sundiata which is an excellent way to teach about geography, leadership, economy and achievements of the African Empire of Mali under Sundata. Then, students use a plot diagram to dissect the key elements of the story (an answer key is included). Next, students get to read one of six African fables as a group, while using a storyboard graphic organizer to take it down to five key scenes.
The next class day students practice a dramatic griot presentation. There are two options for teachers! In one option, all students do a dramatic fable read and act out, battling with another group for the best performance. In another option, students get a choice of the fable act-out, a dramatic dance or a visual storyboard. Either option is fun and it comes with an CCSS-ELA aligned Speaking and Listening rubric!
Of course, teacher instructions are included!
