This resource introduces students to grit as a character trait and then requires them to research and present about a famous person who has overcome obstacles in order to become successful.
The lesson utilizes Angela Duckworth's research on grit. Students begin the lesson by taking the 12 item grit survey, and then discuss what they think grit means. After they have defined grit themselves and discussed it with the students around them, they will write down the official definition and then score their survey. Once the surveys have been scored, students will watch Angela Duckworth's Ted Talk and then complete a quick write. Lastly, students will be given the speech assignment that requires them to research and present a person's journey to fame.
I personally use this resource as an introduction to the novel True Grit. However, it would also work great in a Career class, speech class, or any unit that deals with motivation/growth mindset.
