What is grocabulary? It's a silly little term that I came up with to describe the combination of joint grammar and vocabulary practice! Students are growing their vocabulary and grammar knowledge simultaneously.
With this worksheet, students will practice identifying simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence types, but they will also have opportunities to determine unfamiliar word meanings using context clues. The main goal is grammar instruction with this assignment, but teachers can also address the reading literacy common core standard of using context clues to determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words. And trust me, these words are fun! Students will walk away from the assignment talking about these silly words.
I like to find ways to make grammar more entertaining. If your students enjoy silly lessons and topics, they should appreciate the humor behind this sentence types practice worksheet. Trick them into practicing a rather boring grammatical concept by throwing in some collywobbles and snickersnees.
Understanding various types of sentences is a crucial element of being a talented writer. If students can grasp the concept of dependent and independent clauses as well as how to combine them and what punctuation to use with each sentence type, they are well on their way to excelling at writing.
