Life Skills | Grocery Shopping | Special Education | Real World Math |
After recently giving my students a grocery ad and providing them with a budget to shop, I was astonished to see how many of them did not get the concept of buying multiple items. Many students see the price tag and assume it automatically means for "one item," when in all reality, it likely is per pound or something similar. This was very apparent to me when students thought they could buy a huge turkey for only $0.69!
I have created this download to help fill a void in the classroom when it comes to calculating prices at the grocery store. These easy to print task cards are ready to go and provide students with REAL WORLD images and prices for many items they will see at their local grocery store.
Each task card comes with a simple problem to help challenge students to practice how to buy multiple of something. This also provides them with the much needed practice for sight word identification, money skills, and number sense as well!
This download would also be great to incorporate into IEP goals:
"By mm/dd/yyyy, given 10 randomly selected items from a grocery ad and asked to calculate their total prices, student X will calculate their correct prices from _____% accuracy to _____% accuracy"
Parents love seeing the relevance of lessons like this and I promise you your kids will too!
