Teach With Me

These 18, groundhog-themed sentence cards, are a quick, easy and fun way to learn a bit about Punxsutawney Phil & groundhogs, while practicing capitalization and end punctuation.

I have made "Fix the Sentence" time, part of my daily morning routine, which my students absolutely love.

Grammar can often be tedious & a bit boring for students, but by writing 1-2 sentences on the board each morning, then calling on a student to find & fix one mistake, then explain what they did & why, turns things into a fun, game-like activity that takes just a few minutes. That student, then chooses a classmate to find & fix another mistake.

Because "find & fix the mistakes" is such a hit with my students, I decided to make themed cards for the various things that we study & include information & interesting facts in the sentences. This pack is on groundhogs.

Teacher Comment:

  • "I used this during my work on writing rotation. This was a great review and practice for my 1st graders."

Each sentence is on a pocket chart card, with 3, horizontal sentence cards on a 1-page pattern.

Print, laminate & trim the cards, then put them in a pocket chart.

Read the cards together as a whole group to practice a lot of sight words.

Choose a student to come up and using a dry erase marker, circle letters that should be capitalized and then add end punctuation. (period, question mark & exclamation point).

You could also write them on your whiteboard, or pass a card out to each child to correct.

For more practice, as an individual activity, have students choose X number of mini cards and rewrite the sentences correctly in their writing journals.

Afterwards, students can swap their paper with a partner to correct.

I've included 2 sizes of mini "fix the sentence" cards for this, which make a nice language arts word work activity too.

There are 18 mini cards on one sheet of paper, as well as 36 smaller cards, also on a one-page pattern.

Simply print, laminate and trim several copies for a class set.
