This Groundhog Day glyph is an excellent activity for reading and following directions, and requires problem solving, communication, and data organization. It has the students coloring or gluing different items on a groundhog based on information about themselves. Students are to finish the groundhog glyph using the eight categories listed below.
1) Head covering
2) In the Sky
4) Around the Groundhog's Neck
7) Color the Groundhog
Examples of the first three categories can be viewed on the short version of the handout. So that each student has the same groundhog to start with, a printable outline is provided on page 4 of this six page activity.
At the end of the activity is a completed groundhog glyph. Reading the completed glyph and interpreting the information represented is a skill that requires deeper thinking by the student. Students must be able to analyze the information presented in visual form. A glyph such as this one is very appropriate to use in the CCSS data management strand of math. An answer key is included.
Kindergarten teachers can easily adapt this activity since the instructions include pictures.
