This Groundhog Day prediction activity is a perfect way for students to make their predictions after all of reading, researching, and learning about Groundhog Day. Will Phil see his shadow and we will have 6 more weeks of winter or will he not see his shadow and summer will be here soon? I love this quick, simple Groundhog’s Day predication activity. Students choose a snowflake if they think he will see his shadow. Students who think spring is right around the corner choose the sunshine. They write their name on their chosen symbol and place it on the portable chart. This is a portable display works great for reading Specialist and reading interventionists. It also works well as a literacy station during reading workshop. I do love the option of creating a larger display for classroom teachers-the groundhog is so adorable!
I have used this activity in a variety of ways.
1) Whole group-I use the large symbols and let them color them before adding to
our classroom display. I included a two-part groundhog that can be used for a
larger display. There is a color and black and white option.
2) I have used it in small groups and as a station activity. I use the small
groundhog image and laminate it in the center of a file folder. Students cast their votes on the sides. It is nice and compact but still has the same effect.
