Description

Groundhog Day has never been more fun as students engage in NGSS based activities to learn all about the science of shadows and light! Students will practice phenomena-based inquiry, observation, and model creation. They'll go on a shadow hunt and elaborate by creating their own shadow puppet stories to share the tradition of Groundhog Day.

I love finding the wonder of science concepts in every day activities that are exciting for students to explore. My “Science of” series does just that. In this edition, students explore the science of shadows paired with the entertaining GROUNDHOG DAY holiday. This activity could last a couple days or could be expanded on as the core phenomena of an entire unit. Imagine learning about Punxsutawney Phil with a content-rich activity like this! Feel free to pull your favorite activities, or complete the entire 5E lesson sequence!

These activities are arranged in a "5E" format. Students will ENGAGE in the phenomena and modeling creation, EXPLORE dry ice information, safety, and discovery activities, EXPLAIN their observations by finding research to support what they saw, ELABORATE with a STEM Challenge, and EVALUATE their understanding of the science of shadows by writing and creating shadow puppet stories.
