February 2 – Groundhog Day! Use this fun packet to teach your students about groundhogs, hibernation, and shadows. Make a fun, easy craftivity using simple materials so children can see first hand how the position of the sun in the sky effects shadows we see here on Earth! Packet includes:
- Intro your students to the topic with the 3 photo slides, then do groundhog follow up worksheet that reviews 3 facts on groundhogs: they are mammals, rodents, herbivores
- Hibernation cut and paste: show where a groundhog, bear, beetle, and frog go in the wintertime
-Groundhog day info – draw the sun’s location based on the groundhog’s shadow
-Prediction bar graph – will the groundhog see his shadow?
-Groundhog shadow plate craftivity – Materials: paper plate, paper, crayons, scissors- use this outdoors or with a flashlight to see how the position of the sun changes the groundhog’s shadow. My kids love making these!
