This is a 400+ slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), built-in activities with directions, video links, four page homework / classwork, answer key, lesson notes, Love Canal reading with questions and answers, groundwater pollution worksheet, and more. I've recently merged this lesson bundle with my water on earth lesson bundle. Water on Earth begins this lesson bundle and then it moves into groundwater. A new review game of over 125 slides with answers concludes this lesson and ties both lessons together. See below for more details.
Water on Earth Lesson included in this bundle
Note: This PowerPoint is part of my water unit, and water on earth lesson so please do not purchase both.
This PowerPoint begins with a picture of tiny circles that colored green and yellow. The students are asked to take a guess about the photo. The answer is revealed that they are looking at agricultural fields from an airplane. This leads into the idea that they are circular because of irrigation. Groundwater as precious resource is discussed and how this resource is being depleted over a series of slides. A definition of groundwater, and review of the water cycle and wells occurs. A recharge vs. discharge activity is described. This activity has the students learn about life on their own. Each student get a calculator and the process of balancing a checkbook over several months with bills vs. paychecks occurs. The students go bankrupt in the end as discharge does not equal recharge. Groundwater depletion is then described. The negative impacts of groundwater depletion are described 1) Drying up of wells 2) Reduction of water in streams, rivers, lakes. 3) Deterioration of water quality 4)Increase pumping cost 5) Land use quality decreases. A neat activity has students create a line graph in their notebook. They are given the data and then asked a series of questions. The answers are provided after the activity. The areas of serious groundwater depletion in the United States are described. A water usage homework is described that has students examine their own water usage. Another activity has students learn how heavy water is by carrying a 5 gallon bucket. A discussion of modern plumbing and water treatment follows. Groundwater contamination is defined and sources of ground water contamination is pointed out. An activity has the students visit Love Canal using Google Earth. After a description of the events that occurred there, a link to an article from the EPA is provided for the class to read (teacher can copy and print out / ask questions) This is a neat PowerPoint full of hands-on activities and important notes. Please see the entire Water Molecule Unit that I offer on TpT before purchasing this PowerPoint.
Water on Earth Part 1
This PowerPoint begins by asking the students why should we study water? Students are then asked to create a list of all the ways people use / rely on water. From this list, the class is asked to shrink / combine this large list into 6 ways humans rely on water. After the class created the list, the slideshow compares their list to the teachers list and describes...1) Survival / Health, 2) Household Uses 3) Recreational Uses 4) Industrial 5) Transportation 6) Agricultural. Students are then shown a picture of the Earth from space and asked to guess what % of Earth is covered in water. The answer is then revealed and some of the waters locations pointed out such as oceans, ice caps, atmosphere, etc. An activity / demonstration (I have run it as both) has the teacher fill a 5 gallon bucket full of water. The slideshow then slide by slide describes what amount of the 5 gallon bucket is the icecaps, inland lakes, then rivers, then groundwater, then atmosphere, and so on. The students realize that just a tiny fraction of the 5 gallon bucket is freshwater that is available and that most of the water is undrinkable / not suitable for agriculture (salt water) or locked in the ice caps. A series of slides then describe the activity in detail with actual percentages. Students are asked to create a pie graph of the data presented. If you want to play it safe you can end the PowerPoint here or press on for the last 30 slides. I wanted to get the point across to my students that they are extremely lucky to live in the United States (I have lived and worked in rural East Africa and seen some difficult life situations) I show pictures of normal kid life like water fights and slip n' slides, followed by starving children and adults. The process is repeated over and over. Kids get the message quickly and your classroom will go from laughing about slip n' slides to absolute silence. Messages about % of people who starve to death each day is provided and lack of water resources. The message is that your students are the luckiest kids in the world because they are sitting in a classroom with an abundance of water resources and a stable government. A link to an article about the "The War Over the Well" from the Washington Post in Somalia is provided. This is a neat PowerPoint with many hands-on opportunities / class involvement. The last section is powerful but I feel important as most middle-level students do not know how most of the world lives. This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be as interactive as possible and ask many questions, provide built-in opportunity to review material, explain directions to activities, and much more. Transition effects are never used.
Please visit my other posting on TpT called the Water Molecule Unit which includes this PowerPoint within the 1500+ slide PowerPoint roadmap, 14 page bundled homework / assessment, 7 page modified assessment, detailed answer keys, and 8 pages of unit notes for students who may require assistance that chronologically follow the PowerPoint slideshow. The answer keys and unit notes are great for support professionals.
