26 page DYNAMITE lab fusing together MATH, GRAPHING, GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS, EARTH SCIENCE, GEOLOGY, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, HYDROLOGY, and THE NATURE OF SCIENCE.
Using sediment samples of gravel, sand, and silt/clay, students complete a comprehensive investigation exploring the dynamic relationship between groundwater, sediments, soils, and rock layers.
The lab portion dives into the concepts of porosity and permeability related to sediment compaction and pore space. These concepts are then tied to a variety of sediments of their various sizes and shapes. The lab procedure is delivered step by step with a picture walkthrough. Materials needed for the lab are sediment samples (sand, gravel, and silt/clay), beakers, syringes, graduated cylinders, and a film canister or comparable small container.
Students and teachers alike will LOVE this lab! Students because it's FUN and involves real mathematical and scientific principles in a cool way. Teachers because it is a multi and cross-curricular lesson that is real world science. The materials are cheap and/or easy to get and can be done individually by students, in small classes, and/or large classes. In addition, this lab can be modified for either higher or lower level learners. A great assessment tool!
Cut and paste or Velcro and laminate for special education applications and alternative assessments.
