In this activity, students will solve multi-step word problems with rational numbers. Fractions, decimals, and/or percents are used in the same problem. Students will work in three-person cooperative learning groups. This activity provides great practice after a lesson.
Each group member has a different set of problems, but the answer to #1 is the same in all sets. The same is true of the rest of the problems in each set. The sets are differentiated.
* Set A is the most basic. Most problems are limited to 2-3 steps. The fractions and mixed numbers used are limited to unit fractions.
* Set B has problems with 3-4 steps. There is more variety in the fractions and mixed numbers used.
* Set C is the most challenging. Problems require 4 or more steps.
* Set B is offered in 2 versions. Mathematically, the problems are the same. One version is offered in the same format as Sets A and C. The second version is offered with reduced language. This could be used with English Language Learners (ELLs) or with students who have reading difficulties.
This file includes instructions, an answer key, and four printable student pages. (Set A, two versions of Set B, and Set C)
