Challenge and intrigue your students! Puzzlements are a fantastic way to get your students thinking, questioning, researching, writing, and synthesizing! Do your students like to ask questions? Would you like to make researching a specific topic more exciting? Well now you can with this GATE Puzzlement Activity Organizer!
All you have to do is find a picture or some other intriguing resource (video clip, poem, song, math problem, etc.) and show it to your students. This should be something puzzling/exciting/peculiar/interesting or a unit of study coming up in one of the content areas you teach. I like to use this as an opening to my science or math units. Kids then ask questions as you write all questions down for students to see. You can either let the students pick 3 questions from your list to research, or you can choose which ones are most relevant.
From this point on, students simply research the answers to these questions using resources such as textbooks, books, the Internet, encyclopedias, classroom walls, you name it! If you don't have technology in the room, you could save the research for the computer lab! Don't have a computer lab? No problem; you can use textbooks or any type of article. After researching and writing down the information found under the part that says "Research and Answers", students will continue to answer the questions that follow. These questions are embedded with Depth and Complexity to assist with higher level thinking (students do not need to have a background in the Depth and Complexity icons to complete this activity).
I have included two different puzzlement formats. The first 2-page format leaves room at the very top for you to add your own picture(s). This allows students to have the picture on their own organizer. The second format does away with the space at the top for the picture(s), and instead has another question added to the second page about change over time. Because it does not allow room for a picture, the teacher would need to have it posted for students to see. ***I've also added another page which asks for students to include their sources of information.
Detailed directions for use are included.
