This is a collections of open-ended story problems designed to engage students in critical and collaborative thinking. Exactly the type of activity you want your principal to observe during your evaluation! These prompts are without a right or wrong answer, it is about the process of using different math strategies and trying to convince other groups that their answer is correct. You will score high marks for classroom management, having high expectations, student engagement, and student-led learning and feedback.
Starting with 4th grade standards, this activity can be used well beyond. Students of all ages have fun as they engage in this low-risk activity, yet they repeatedly practice mathematical functions and need to think critically about the different ways to interpret the question. This activity encourages students to think outside the box, use reasoning skills, and then defend their group-work with the class. The activity is suggested to run 30 min once a week and will quickly become the activity students look forward to. Who knew math could be this much fun?!?!
As a coach, I love this activity as a review or a precursor to new learning, but most of all because students of all levels are engaged and learning together. EXACTLY why this activity is perfect for your principal to observe!
* Coaching instructions
* Special notes for the teacher
* 20 prompts (approximately one new prompt per week)
* Teacher Cues for corresponding cards, also listed with skill type for easy selection.
* List of math standards directly addressed (mostly time, area, measurement, geometry, money and general functions.)
Thank you for stopping at "The Core of Coaching" where I hope to not only provide quality activities, but help to elevate your approach to teaching in order to help you feel confident when observed. Please let me know if you have any questions, I'm here to help!
