This 33-page document includes materials for practicing reading and writing, but extends into a group research project that focuses on group dynamics and allows for discussion on research strategies. Students are given 2 documents (a scientific research report and an article about the report) to read and learn about the effects of music on learning. The students are given directions about how to read carefully, extracting details to support controlling ideas. The second article includes a multiple choice that reflects on the NY State Common Core Regents 2014. It is also includes a mini version of the writing task for Part 2 of that Regents. The document then leads into directions for a group project on the best learning or study strategies in which students use skills at researching (please note that this packet does not include anything about researching strategies, except the reading strategies included at the beginning of the document) to work in groups to successfully devise a controlling idea and presentation. It is a side goal of the assignment for groups to develop a dynamic that allows for a successful presentation. The document includes the directions for this assignment, 2 rubrics (peer and teacher grading), possible group roles, suggestions for developing a group contract, group agenda worksheets, and notes on memos. The beginning and end of the document include notes from me about how to get your unit off the ground, as well as how to grade the projects efficiently.
