Group Vocabulary Discussion Guide
This document contains a few of vocabulary and word study activities that can be incorporated into lessons as an introduction to reading, as intermittent mini-lessons, group activities or as independent activities learners can complete within learning centers, for example. These vocabulary and reading activities can be applied to any reading material and modeled by the teacher. As Common Core assessment designers continue to search for ways for students to determine how they arrived at their answers, these activities help students think critically and provide practice using cognitive skills.
The Group Vocabulary Discussion Guide, leads students through a process where students search and determine the difficult words in their own opinion. Students record the words from text their group determines are the most difficult, the meanings of the words and also determine the theme through which the word is being introduced. Finally, student groups share the words they determined were the most difficult with other groups.
Through SPREE, students also scan, predict, read, evaluate, and extend reading. Additionally, students are provided opportunities through graphic organizers, to visualize and illustrate the new words. Students can then share their individual illustrations.
In addition, there is a reading comprehension Guide, inviting students to synthesize, connect, summarize, infer, evaluate and apply the information from the text to society, to students personal life and to other reading materials.
