The latest research in math learning and growth mindsets stresses the importance of putting the focus on how engaged in the process of learning young mathematician are rather than how quickly or correctly they can perform a computation. One way to do this and keep kids accountable for their part in learning is to use a participation quiz. While I created this for math class, the group work expectations are applicable to any subject area.

Print enough individual checklists so that you have one for each student

Establish groups of 3-5 students

Post “Participation Quiz” and “Group Action Items” for all to see

Review expectations for group participation

Review the type of thinking and learning you will be looking for

Introduce the task to be completed or problem to be solved

Allow time for students to gather materials and get settled into the task

Wander around the room while students work and record observed behaviors by checking them off on the checklists

Return checklists to students as feedback on their work during group work time

Assign grades to participation if desired
