Complex sentences can be difficult for young children, particularly but not necessarily due to a language delay. Children often need to hear longer sentences and be provided with opportunities to practice forming them in a safe experimental environment. Early experiences that are ideal for this include book reading times with parents during childhood. A healthy language environment at home is essential for these oral language skills to establish and blossom.
This program is suited to children who have oral language that requires a little more depth and colour. Short sentences convey some information but often omit reasons, solutions, emotions, sequence and problem solving. This program, in its first stages is designed to help teach children how to grow their simple sentences into more elaborated sentences both orally and in written form. It is also helpful as a program for parents who wish to assist in building on their child's language and literacy development. Words focused on in this program include:
* because, then, when, if, so, before, after, while, until, but, and.
As a speech pathologist, I have often needed a simple program such as this to start off some intervention with children and parents
