Everyday my students and I have family time. During this family time, I deliberately plan to teach my first graders social skills such as character education, how to be respectful, and my favorite, the topic of growth mindset. It is so important for my students to know that they are not dumb, but that their brain is a muscle that needs to be exercised. I have created this growth mindset unit, that takes about 2-3 weeks to get through with about 20 minutes a day.
This 35 jam packed growth mindset resource includes the FOLLOWING
✔growth mindset info sheet with links to growth mindset videos
on youtube and story books to read in class.
✔ a two page growth mindset anticipatory set
to gauge where your students stand on the topic. I usually compare the anticipatory set to the last day writing activity that we do.
✔ 20 growth mindset question cards
that you can play a "game" with in class. The questions help the students think about the topic of growth mindset. On some cards, the students will be asked to encourage a friend that is having trouble with their way of thinking. This is offered in black and white.
✔ 5 page flip book
that allows the students to get access to 4 ideas in growth mindset. This is where the students are asked to copy a sentence down that they have to remember. They are then asked to complete a few tasks in the growth mindset flip book.
✔ Awards for students
that show concepts of growth mindset in real life. This is available in color and black and white.
✔ growth mindset Posters to hang around the room to keep reminding the students to keep their heads up and keep learning hard. This is available in black and white and color.
✔ 6 page Reader
that breaks a hard concept into kid language. My students love this reader because they get to read in a narrative form, and they also love to color in the pictures.
✔ Lastly, you will receive student printables
such as growth mindset reading comprehension, two graphic organizers, and two growth mindset writing prompts. I usually do these towards the end of the unit.
All color pages are placed in the back for convenient printing.
Overall, after this unit, every single one of my students is pumped to push themselves to the limit. When one student gets down because something becomes too hard, then I hear another student encourage them with words that we learned during this unit.
Who is it for?
This is great for for late Kindergarten and first grade. It can also be used in second grade though the reading might be too easy for them.
