Power Words for Developing a Growth Mindset is designed to help you change your class’ mindset, your students’ mindset, and even your own! This resource covers an introduction to the power of words and the Growth Mindset. 23 Power Words are introduced to your students over 20 days of class.

The growth mindset encompasses these ideas: a desire to learn, work hard, never give up, grow from your mistakes, and embrace challenges. People who have this mindset will succeed!

But how do we change our students’ mindsets?

Have you ever heard: Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? This is a lie. Words hurt. Words such as stupid, dumb, loser, failure, and hate can hurt. Even words as simple as and unassuming as can't and quit can have a harmful impact on your life. They can paralyze you. Why do these words hurt?

Words have power!

In order to change our students’ mindsets, we need to change what they are saying about themselves and others.

Change their words to change their minds!

In Power Words for Developing the Growth Mindset, students will be introduced to the power of words. They will be exposed to 23 powerful words that will impact their thinking and mindsets. By adding these words to your classroom culture, climate, and vocabulary, students will begin to develop their own Growth Mindset!

How to use this resource

Power Words for Developing a Growth Mindset is designed to last at least 20 days of instruction. Teachers introduce the resource by using the introduction slides. These slides cover the power of words and the impact they have on us. Teachers then present one new Power Word each day. Discuss the word and what it means to your students’ thinking and to your classroom. This does not have to take a huge amount of time. Quick and easy but highly impactful! As each word is covered, add the accompanying poster to a bulletin board to create an inspiring display that can be referred to throughout the year.

Why I Developed this Resource

A couple of years ago, a video changed my life. It was a Ted Talks video of Carol Dweck on developing a Growth Mindset. This video sparked a search for finding out what the Growth Mindset was and how I needed to change my own mindset in certain areas of my life.

It also sparked a search on how to impact my students’ mindsets in my classroom.

I developed this resource to help you reach your students and ignite the Growth Mindset inside of them.

Hopefully by changing their vocabulary, we can begin to change their thoughts about themselves and their learning.

Happy Teaching,
