Looking for some engaging no-prep activities to introduce your classes to the theory of growth mindset?
Made famous by psychologist Carol Dweck, the growth mindset is more than just a belief in effort. There are a few key elements that must be included in any attempt to teach students to adopt this way of thinking, but once you do teach students how to grow their brains, the results will be astounding.
When you introduce your students to the ideas behind growth mindset with this resource you will:
•engage them right off the bat with a fun “quiz” on growth and fixed mindset
• watch a fascinating and informative TED Talk that explains how growth mindset works and how we can all work to adopt a growth mindset in our own lives
• put your students on the path to growing their brains by taking on more challenges
• help your classes to understand the importance of failure in learning
This two-day mini unit introduces students to the theory and starts them on a path to redefine areas in their own lives where they have a fixed mindset. After the lesson, students will have a good sense of the difference between growth mindset and fixed mindset and how they can cultivate a growth mindset.
Included in the packet are links to the handout that Dweck created to teach her students about the growth mindset, a pre unit "quiz" for students to begin to understand their views on learning and effort, and questions on a TEDtalk video that will more fully explain growth mindset and fixed mindset to your classes.
The entire mini unit is ready to go with minimal prep on you part. In fact, this would be a great choice for substitute plans!
