Growth Mindset & STEM NGSS 5-PS1-3 Aligned: Electrical Insulators & Conductors
This lesson uses Thomas Edison as a model for performing a STEM project, and uses some of his famous quotes as examples of a growth mindset. By integrating a STEM project with Growth Mindset principles, students will explore the properties of electrical conduction and insulation, and learn how a growth mindset can lead to success.
Along the way, students will do experimental research, predict outcomes, and analyze experimental results. In addition, they will learn some history of Thomas Edison and his mindset, and from that they will learn the benefits of a growth mindset for solving scientific and engineering problems.
This lesson is aligned with NGSS Performance Expectation 5-PS1-3 “Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.” It covers Disciplinary Core Idea: “Measurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials.”
This lesson focuses on the property of electrical conductivity of materials.
What you will get in this product:
1. A nine slide introduction PowerPoint.
Introducing Thomas Edison and his growth mindset beliefs through his quotations and accomplishments. This section also introduces the concepts of conductors and insulators, and give the students an assignment to do experiments to answer some questions for Mr. Edison.
2. A nine slide PowerPoint giving detailed instructions for the experimental setup.
The students will assemble a simple circuit to test the conductivity of various materials and objects.
This experimental lab can be done three ways:
With two or three-person groups
As a demonstration by the teacher
If time and resources are limited, An Answer Key PowerPoint has been provided
showing the actual testing and results.
3. Forms for the students
to make forecasts and record test results, and reflect on Growth Mindset ideas.
4. An Optional 19-slide PowerPoint Presentation Answer Key
