Do you teach and foster growth mindset with your students? If so, here is a MEANINGFUL and AFFIRMING activity to use at the START and the END of the school year to reinforce growth mindset! It’s a great way to “set the tone” for a positive new school year and to “wrap up” what has been taught and practiced throughout a school year that is coming to a close!
There are 24 I Have/Who Has style cards.Unlike other I Have/Who Has games, these cards to do not follow a question/answer format. Rather, the cards are to be read in order and each one features a growth mindset themed statement. Students will take turns reading their cards aloud, speaking the growth mindset themed statements on each card to one another, and listening. These cards are intended for 1st-3rd grade readers; some are more challenging than others, and you can pass out the cards accordingly.
There are also two different writing worksheets for use at the start and the end of the school year (both come in two styles – with and without handwriting guide lines). After completing the growth mindset I Have/Who Has cards, have students complete the writing activities! The finished writing products would be ideal for a bulletin board display at the start or end of the school year (2 mini-posters included!), put together as pages in a class book, or added to students’ portfolios.
START OF SCHOOL YEAR: The cards can be used at the start of a school year as part of your introduction to, or reinforcement of, growth mindset concepts!
EXTENTION: These activities would be ideal to use with the book Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. This forward-thinking book is a wonderful literature choice for the first day/week or the last day/week of school! Read the book first and then follow with the growth mindset cards, and complete the accompanying writing activities!
END OF SCHOOL YEAR: Looking for a meaningful and special way to send off your students on the last day of school? Have students form a big circle and pass out the cards. Have students read the cards one time exactly as written. Then, the second time around, have the students read only the growth mindset statements on their cards (easy to distinguish – they are written in color). As your students read aloud the growth mindset statements one after another while standing together in a circle, they will be given an AFFIRMING, POWERFUL, and ENCOURAGING memory to take with them into the summer…and into the next school year!
