Have you ever noticed how State Assessments can make even the brightest, most successful students doubt themselves? Students may even start to believe that they are failures.
The reason for these negative thoughts is their MINDSET. It is so powerful.
Somewhere along the way, someone may have been telling them things to make them think that they were a failure if they weren’t perfect.
They probably don’t realize that success comes from perseverance, not being smart.
For struggling students, gaining a Growth Mindset is just as important. Learning that they can do many more things if they think differently is crucial to being successful. They can do HARD things and really enjoy it!
We have to start praising the right behaviors for them to change the old ones.
My goal in this product is two fold.
The first goal is to help students like this feel more successful and use their failures to help them grow. I want them to change their way of thinking, so when something gets tough, they know how to talk to themselves to make sure they don’t give up.
The second goal is to give teachers a way to grow their students’ thinking in this area.
I have included cards to give students when they are showing a growth mindset. There is also a pouch for them to store their “Success Stories” in. I have also provided a fun way for teachers to work with their students on Multiple Choice Assessment Material. This will give you the opportunity to see how your students are dealing with their successes and their failures.
The game is called “Secret Ballot.”
Students of all ages enjoy this game! Here’s how to play.
First you’ll need to print the Secret Ballot Pouch and the Multiple Choice Cards.
Then fold the pouch in half and seal the edges except for the top.
Laminate the pouch and the cards then cut them out.
Open the top to the pouch so that you can place the multiple choice cards inside.

You will need for your students to have a worksheet/test prep page that is multiple choice.
You will have a small group of students. Instruct them to solve one of the questions.
( It can be any subject as long as the answer choices are multiple choice.)
As they are working, place the correct answer to the question into the SECRET BALLOT POUCH. Give the pouch to one of the students. For more fun, I sneak it to them under the table. After everyone has finished solving the answer, ask
“Who has the Secret Ballot?” That student will read the question aloud for the group. He/She will then pull the answer from the pouch and announce it to the group. Example: “The answer is “C”.” At this time, you will discuss the answers that were chosen by students I the group. It is the perfect time to instill a growth mindset in the students.
For instance, listen to how they react to their failure. Tell them to celebrate their mistakes and start learning from them When you see a change in their reaction and mindset, give them a Mindset Game Changer Card.
Growth Mindset Posters
Introduce all of the Growth Mindset posters and discuss them so students will understand that it might have been their mindset holding them back from the beginning.
Discuss each card and how it could help them in a positive way.
Introduce the Growth Mindset Gamechanger cards. Tell them that they will start earning the cards as you see changes in their mindset. Start by giving everyone a Success Story pouch and the first Gamechanger card. “I Was Born to Learn” They will feel more confident as they earn more cards.
