Product Description
These activities are meant to help students learn vocabulary related to nature in Spanish.

These activities go along with the song "Guantanamera" as performed by Celia Cruz. This song is readily available on YouTube and iTunes and a link to the song is referenced. These activities may be completed without the music video, so please make sure that the video is appropriate for your students before playing it.

Students will begin by reading a brief biography, in Spanish, of the artist. They will then use that information, in addition to information garnished from other resources, to complete a timeline of the artist's life.

Students will then listen to the song "Guantanamera" and attempt to fill in some common Spanish words that are missing from the lyrics of the song. Two versions of this activity are included; both with and without a word bank.

Since the lyrics of the song make reference to cultural events and products, a dictionary explaining the meanings of these terms is included.

Also included is a U.S. map referencing places within the United States that have the highest populations of people of Cuban heritage. Students are asked to identify these states using the map details.

Next students will be asked to find several lines of the song based on their English meanings. They will then manipulate those lyrics to include additional nature vocabulary while working off the structure of the identified lyrics.

Finally, students will see the first verses of the poem Versos Sencillos by José Martí which is heavily referenced in the lyrics of "Guantanamera". They will read the poem, paying special attention to the nature words used within the poem. They will then categorize these words according to meaning.
