This is a quick and thoughtful Valentine’s Day project for elementary students to give their parents. I have done this project for many years and have had many parents say this is the best Valentine’s Day present ever!
The task is to have students write a book about the different things they love about their parent(s). There are ten question prompts for them to answer in a creatively designed book template.
For the cover, I usually take a picture of each student with their hands formed into a heart-shape sitting above their chest.
First, use the outline provided to have the students make a first draft of their title and answers to the questions. Then conference with each student individually to help them expand on their thoughts and edit their spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
To publish it, I have the students create a final draft by hand or on the computer. If designing it by hand, have them color in their own illustrations in the box on each page. For younger students, you may want to pick a few of the pages for them to complete. The last step is to bind the book using a binding machine or using three strands of red or pink ribbon to bind it. Included are six extra designs for creating their own covers page.
Create a Real Book:
This can also be turned into a real book using the website storybird.com Then parents can view it online for free or purchase a hard copy of the book as a keepsake.
Storybird.com is a free site that illustrators use to promote their artwork. This option takes more effort on your part because you will need to set up a teacher account and add your students. They will also need some direction so they can use it. If you do use the storybird.com site be sure to double check their spelling before publishing it on the site because after it’s published it can’t be edited.
Publishing it will create a link to a digital online book that parents can view at home and/or purchase a real book with their children’s words and artwork they’ve chosen for each page. The books come in a variety of styles and prices including a paperback cover or hard cover book.
Any method you choose to showcase their loving words will be a treasured keepsake of parents for many years to come.
