Ask ten random people you know about their school experience with Algebra. I'll bet that nine of those people will describe their experience as an endless set of procedures that haven't had much application to their adult lives. This is a tragedy! Relationships and patterns are everywhere and Algebra is an art intended to help explain them. Furthermore, Algebra should be intuitive - Algebra should make sense!
This is a game and investigation to get the students thinking about Algebra in a non-procedural way. I have used it in my 6th and 7th grade classrooms (Though it can be easily modified for high school Algebra). Every student - from the struggling learners to the high-flyers - can engage in this activity in a meaningful way in order to take their Algebraic thinking to the next level.
Directions and Teachers Notes are included.
