PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Experienced writers use a variety of sentences to make their writing more interesting and lively. Too many simple sentences may sound choppy and immature while too many long sentences may be difficult to read and hard to understand. A good writer uses different types of writing to help his/her writing flow. There are three types of sentences: simple, compound, and complex.

The activity not only defines and gives examples of simple, compound, and complex sentences, but it also gives students the opportunity to work with each type. Students are given ten sentences and asked to determine the type of sentence each is. They are then asked to write a simple, compound, and complex sentence of their own.

I used this as an independent practice with the types of sentences; however, this can also be used as a unique assessment.

This activity correlates with the Common Core Standards. Specifically, it hits third grade's CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.1i. It also is a good review to use before fifth grade's CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.5.3a.

If you like this activity, also make sure to check out "Sorting Sentences" another activity I created when teaching simple, compound, and complex sentences.
