Three guide word activities/assessment pieces are in this packet. They can be used in a literacy center, in pairs, or in whole group instruction. There are six usable student pages in this file. I purposely avoided a title page to save ink and paper.
First there is an identify-the-dictionary-page with 24 words. The students must alphabetize and identify the dictionary page where the word is found. Students must alphabetize sometimes to the third and fourth letter. I included a complete answer key for this page so that if you did put it in a literacy center, students could check their own work.
I included a page of guide word strips just for convenience that could be projected on a screen for whole group practice. Additionally, there are six task cards with an accompanying page for students to write definitions and sentences. The task cards could be left on one page and added to a homework bag with the writing page.
This would be a great refresher just before spring testing; especially for the English language learners who have the accommodation of being able to use dictionaries. Many of those students need more help with dictionaries so they can be successful on standardized tests.
I wrote an "I can" statement for standard L.3.4. d. and included it as a poster. Grades four and five have similar standards so it could easily be used at those levels.
Another idea: Laminate the whole file and use it as one of those centers for fast finishers. Add a wipe off marker and eraser and put it in a folder or envelope for an instant center with no prep or copying.
