This sort is designed to help students learn to sort words in alphabetical order, and with given guide words, to decide which words would be on a page in the dictionary or thesaurus.
There are 8 ABC order sorts, and within each sort all the words begin with the same letter, so students must sort by the second letter. They can use the header cards to sort into three categories– before the page, on the page, and after the page. The words in italics designate the guide words for that letter.
It includes an extension for early finishers.
A recording sheet is included, along with an answer key. This could be a great center activity, or a collaborative group activity.
We did this in my third grade classroom and it gave great observational data and helped me target the students that were having difficulty with alphabetical order.
