This activity was designed for student discovery of the concept of multiplication as repeated groups. In this activity, students will roll a die to lay out circle mats (included in the packet). Then, students will roll the die again and put that many counters on EACH circle mat. Then, students will count up the total counters on all of the mats to find the total objects. This is a guided activity, so the first page will walk students through the process step-by-step. On the back, students will complete an accountability/recording sheet. At the end of the activity, there are five journal response questions about the activity. These questions ask students to dig deeper to conceptualize the patterns of multiplication. I have found this type of activity sets students up for success without holding them back from discovering the meaning of multiplication on their own.
