Guided Discoveries are used to establish the norms and routines for the use, care, and storage of materials.
Each worksheet in this pack says "Today I learned the first grade way to..." so it will only work for first grade. (I have kindergarten and 2nd grade posted separately!)
You might think, hey, my students have used crayons before I’m sure they know how. BUT, if you take the time to do a quick lesson on the RIGHT way we use crayons (or any material) in our classroom at the beginning of the year, you will save time, energy and prevent little behavior problems involving the material.
Students will know the expectations and will have practiced with them the right way. It will enable them to make independent and purposeful choices and it will help them use their materials with confidence.
I always start my first week of school with lots of Guided Discoveries (including using the bathroom… there is no worksheet included for that one but I do recommend it!). You will find papers to go along with Guided Discoveries for pencils, crayons, markers, and scissors. You will also find five easy steps to a Guided Discovery to help you plan your lesson.
