Guided Journal Pages
Journal Prompts for Middle School and High School

Guided Journaling will bring something new and interesting to your students!

What is Guided Journaling?
Guided Journaling gives students a variety of prompts to respond to in writing all on one page! The prompts provide students with a way to communicate WHO they are and WHAT they think about the world around them. The pages are user friendly and get reluctant writers writing! You won’t hear “I don’t know what to write.” Additionally, by having students share some of their Guided Journal Pages the pages can be a catalyst for building a classroom community. While they are designed with a language arts class in mind, Guided Journal Pages are appropriate for any middle school/high school classroom.

Why Use Guided Journal Pages?
Does your school use Charlotte Danielson’s Domains as part of teacher evaluation? Guided Journal Pages can be used to demonstrate Domain 1: Planning and Preparation, 1b Demonstrating Knowledge of Students. 2: Classroom Environment, 2a Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport. If used as a beginning of class activity or exit strategy it could be used for domain 2c Managing Classroom Procedures.

Responding to a Guided Journal Page.
Students are encouraged to respond to the prompts in an honest and sincere way. Most of the prompts are short answer, tell us your thoughts, give your opinion or respond to a quote type of activity. The goal is to have the students answer the prompts quickly and completely, without teacher input, guidance or direction. Students should be instructed to respond to the prompts however they interpret the question. There are no wrong answers!

How to Use Guided Journal Pages.
My students keep their Guided Journal Pages in a three-prong folder in the classroom. Each week, on Monday and Wednesday, students get a new Guided Journal Page. I use the pages as bell work, exit slips or anchor activities. Then, on Fridays we wrap up the week by having students share one of the two items from the Guided Journal Pages that were completed that week.

How Guided Journal Pages Can Be Helpful.
Besides helping you to know your students better, Guided Journal Pages can be used by students during free writing time. Finally, at the end of the year I like to give the students their Guided Journal Pages folder as a memoir for the school year. Take a few pictures during the year, add a letter sharing some of your favorite memories of the class and Guided Journal Pages are the perfect parting gift.
