This is a fully editable word document that guides the students through a literary analysis of an excerpt from chapter 3 of The Pearl. This can be used as part of a larger lesson with the other guided literary analysis excerpts from The Pearl. For example, you can use this as a gradual release model by doing the chapter 1 excerpt together as a whole group (I do and We do portion). Then, you can have the students complete this excerpt in collaborative groups (You do - in collaborative groups portion). After this section I would review the analysis as a whole group to check for understanding. The excerpt can also be used to model writing the body paragraph as it lends itself nicely to a body paragraph with two quotes. Then, you can have the students continue to practice this literary analysis using the chapter 2 analysis (I would use this one third as it is the most difficult). This guided analysis has text-based questions that guides the students through the analysis process. These guided questions can be eliminated to allow for more independent thinking. You can eliminate them for some students and not for others to allow for differentiated instruction.
