Description

This binder is intended to be used during your guided math small groups or whole group lesson. I make a binder for each student at my table (about 5) and one for myself. (You could also make a binder for each student in your class. This might be best for COVID-19 accommodations or distance learning. I have also included a folder of JPEGs of each instructional mat for you to insert in your distance learning assignments.) I print each page and insert them in numerical order in plastic sheet protectors. I also put a dry erase board in the front pocket.

The idea is for each student to have access to an instructional work mat for the skill we are working on during that small or whole group lesson. I created work mats for all skills that we cover in our second grade curriculum. I have the binder already out for each student if we are using it during small groups. I just tell them the page I want them to turn to and we get started.

I model in my own binder. I will give them the problem, and they use their work mat and dry erase marker to solve the problem we are working on. If there is not enough space on the work mat, they can pull out the small dry erase board to work on.

Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
