This product walks students through thinking through a multi-step word problem (CC4.OA.3, 3.OA.8). It begins by having them break the information down and write it in a table. (I've had my students do that for years, and it works wonders!) Next, students have to figure out what they need to solve first. They must make an equation and a drawing to show their work. Then, the guided practice leads them into using the answer from the first step to help them solve the next step.
This practice is set up to walk students through a total of 8 problems. The first 5 are set up with thinking questions to guide their thought process. The last 3 problems have an empty table, and a spot for students to write down the question they are looking for in order to solve each step.
It is also scaffolded into two versions - there is a regular version and a "smaller numbers" version. The problems are the same, but the numbers are all smaller. I use these with my struggling students and we get out the unifix cubes to model the process in the multi-step problem.
This activity works great in small group math centers, whole group, or even as an enrichment activity for your high achieving learners. I've also left it as a center once I guided the first 5, and they did the last three on their own--Whatever works for your students!
