A lot of kids who do well during read aloud, or a whole-class novel study, fall apart when they try to apply those same strategies to their independent reading books. This document offers students guiding questions as they read through Day of the Blizzard. You can put a post-it on each page that students need to stop on, and then have them answer the questions. You'll be able to to assess their independent reading, as well as teach them what kind of thinking they should be doing while reading. These questions could also be used to guide book clubs.
