Guided reading - Guided Reading; Guided Reading Reminder Slips - Strategy and Skill Helpers
Use these guided reading help slips at the end of your guided reading session. Simply tear off the slip and place in the student's reader to take home or to use in class.

You will need to provide clear and explicit explanation of each skills/strategy on the slip. The text provided on the slip is a jumping off point for you to model the strategy/skill further before it is sent home.
*** This file has now been updated (still at the same price) to include five different strategies to one page as a second printing alternative. The strategies/skills are provided in color and black and white.
*** A second update to the file, includes the reference of 'full-stop' as a separate printable page for our friends who refer to end punctuation as a 'full-stop'.
*** The final update: one of the strategies/skills reads "Practise recounting the story after you have read it." The word 'practise' has an 's' rather than a 'c' as it is a verb for our British-English users and 'practice' with a 'c' for our US-English users.
There are five of the one skill/strategies to one page. The images seen in the file do not match the strategy, I searched high and low for clip art to suit but the skills are way too specific. Please download the preview file to see if the file suits your students.
These slips will help children make goals by having a concrete notion of what they need to focus on.
Parents will love receiving these slips in their child's reader, so they can also focus on the same skills or strategy.

The file includes 40 skills/strategies for a range of reading levels.
The strategies and skills are not presented in any order or by any criteria. here is a list of the strategies and skills seen on the slips -
• Point to the word that you are reading.
• Get your mouth ready.
• Look at the picture.
• Focus on the first sound.
• Sound out your word.
• Check if the word looks and sounds right.
• Make sure what you’re reading makes sense.
• See what you’re reading in your head, like a movie.
• Chunk the words into parts you know.
• Break down a word into smaller parts.
• Stop and take a breath at a period.
• Take a small breath at a comma.
• Focus on reading fluently.
• Pay attention to reading fluently like a soft wave.
• Reading should sound like talking.
• Slow down when you’re reading.
• Practise recounting the story after you have read it.
• It’s okay to make a mistake. Try to fix your mistake when you hear it.
• Scan the book before you read it and check it is the right one for you.
• Scan the pages before you read to see if there are any tricky words you don’t know. How will you read these words?
• Try not to ask someone to help you read a word. Use your strategies to work out the word.
• Use your finger to point to each word.
• Use your finger to sweep the words.
• Use your eyes to sweep the words.
• Think about your expression. Does it sound right?
• Focus on your intonation.
• Remember to pay attention to speech marks.
• If you see text that is bold, in italics or CAPITALS, you need to change your voice.
• If you see … this means you need to pause before reading on.
• If you’re unsure of a word, look for it around the room, in a list, in your dictionary or ask a friend.
• Stretch out the word and read the sounds you know.
• Is there a smaller word inside the word you are trying to read?
• Blend known sounds together to decode words.
• Try to pronounce the initial, medial and final sounds to read new words.
• Read vowels sounds like final e and vowel teams.
• Be sure to read all the way to the end of the word.
• Focus on your rate of reading.
• If you don’t understand what you are reading, reread the sentence.
• When you notice that you have read a word incorrectly, you need to reread it.
• Use what you know about the book to check for meaning and reread a word if you need to.
