From Useful Creations for Teachers - These ready-to-use guided reading activities based on the PM Readers are the ONLY activities you will need to develop the skills necessary to guide your students into becoming strong and confident readers. Please preview this document to see the specific book titles for which activities have been created. The texts have been chosen to scaffold the early reader in terms of vocabulary and skills. Developed by a Reading Recovery trained teacher, the skills being reinforced and strengthened in these text-specific and student-friendly activities are based on the skills evident in each levelled book. The activities are designed to promote the prior knowledge the student has with a specific text, while emphasizing re-reading the text to assist with the pace and fluency of their oral reading. Having activities that are just the right level to match the text a group of students is working on, while promoting skill development and independence, makes it easy for the teacher to promote differentiated instruction, and have uninterrupted time to work with small reading groups. Meaningful and powerful activities will reinforce sight word vocabulary, phonics, endings, rhyming, syllabication, sentence and story sequencing, basic and higher-level comprehension, positional language, writing vocabulary, writing skills, and word attack skills. The skills being developed increase in complexity and difficulty with each text level. These activities for PM Readers Levels 12, 13 and 14 concentrate heavily on locating information from text, compound words, contractions, story sequencing and retell based on story elements (characters, setting, plot, ending), and answering questions about comprehension and inference in sentence form. Once these activities are completed, the students will be more than ready for the next reading level. As the activities are very visual, they are also great for ESL and special education students.
