This Vowel I Book is Level 4 in a series of guided reading books for our youngest readers. Thus far, it is the highest level of Biter Biscuit Books designed for the emerging reader. Level 4 vowel books focus on book handling skills, concepts about print, hearing sounds in words ~ specifically, medial short vowel sounds, one to one correspondence with words and pointing, decoding across words in continuous text, and the alphabetic principle. Level 4 Biter Biscuit Books have two sentences per page with a pattern that changes with one or two words in both sentences. The emerging reader is now able to identify common high-frequency words by sight and therefore is able to use those words as anchors as he reads and decodes the rest of the text.
Again included in these Alphabet Books is an outline font for lower case letter handwriting practice. Including the handwriting along with the guided reader allows for the child to develop the correct motor pathway for letter formation while connecting it to the sound the letter represents. This will correlate directly to fluency in hearing and recording sounds in words as the child's writing skills progress. Reading and writing are reciprocal skills and these Biter Biscuit Book Alphabet Books allow for those skills to develop together in the young child.
With all four levels of each Biter Biscuit Book the early childhood classroom teacher can easily differentiate instruction without drawing attention to the fact that he/she is doing so. These reproducible, guided reading books have similar covers with a small notation on the bottom right corner indicating the level of guided reader. Every child has “just-right books” to read again and again ~ either in a classroom book basket or at home with parents.
Don't let your early childhood classroom be without these valuable teaching tools!
