When it comes to student choice--purpose is key! Goal setting helps student choice be purposeful. This resource is something I use in conjunction with my choice board during guided reading. Create and set goals as a whole class in the beginning of the school year. Then, introduce the literacy choices students will have when not meeting with a teacher during guided reading block. Hold them accountable for recording their choices on the calendar each day and making sure their choices are goal-focused. You can edit calendar, choices, and goals to fit your class' needs.
