This set of reading comprehension questions is designed to promote and assess students’ understanding of the story “Zack’s Alligator” by Shirley Mozelle. Assignments check for literal comprehension, encourage inferential thinking skills, foster close reading, and cultivate creativity.
The packet is perfect for reading groups or book clubs but could also be used as accountability for independent reading.
The format of each assignment is a half-page (5 ½ x 8 ½) wtih lines for student response, and we’ve designed the packet with each student assignment duplicated on the page to help you save paper and easily slice the page down the middle. Students can glue each assignment into a Reading Response Journal, if they keep one (we like to use composition books). Typically, we read sections of the book together in group and then pass out the corresponding assignment toward the end of our session as a reading check to be completed independently or together. We find that the conversation in the group is more productive if students stay at the same pace and don’t read ahead so that we can make predictions together and monitor student understanding. If your students are working independently, you could print out and collate all assignments to hand out as one set. Answers are provided for the teacher.
Note: "Zack’s Alligator" is a book for beginning readers (F&P Guided Reading Level K, DRA 20, Reading Recovery Level 18) written and illustrated by Shirley Mozelle. As the work is copyrighted, we chose graphics by PinkLemonadeClipart to accompany the activities. In order to complete the assignments, students will need to have their own copies of the work.
